Preparing Your Quilt for Long Arm Services

  • Do not baste your quilt, it will only result in additional charges for me to take out the basting you put in.
  • Your quilt batting should be a minimum of 4 inches wider on the sides and 4 inches longer on the top and bottom of your quilt top.
  • Your quilt backing should be a minimum of 5 inches wider on each side and 5 inches longer on the top and bottom of your quilt top.  Note:  I use zippered leaders to attach your quilt, the extra length at top and bottom of the backing is necessary for this process.
  • Measure the center of the quilt top vertically.  Then measure the outside edges vertically.  Sometimes there will be as much as an inch difference in measurements.  Do the same horizontally.  The most common reasons measurements differ is due to stretched bias edges, or mitered corners.  Too much easement when piecing blocks can result in puckers, this will cause tucks when the quilting is done.  I will take every precaution to avoid this problem.
  • Mark the top of your quilt at the center point.  Do not mark with pins or safety pins, this will leave holes in your quilt top.  Marking should be done 1/8" from edge.
  • Please ensure your seams are closed along the edges of your quilt
  • No embellishments sewn to the top of the quilt prior to quilting.
  • The quilt top and backing should be clipped free of loose threads on both the front and back sides of your quilt top.  Loose threads can cause snagging or uneven stitching.  On lighter fabrics, loose threads will show through!
  • Tops and backing should be pressed with seams pressed open or to one side.  If you have pieced your backing fabric, please seam with 5/8" seam allowance and press open.  This will ensure a stronger seam throughout the life of the quilt.
  • If you have decided to use any design patterns for quilting that are copyrighted patterns, please include them with your quilt.  They will be returned with your finished project.
